THANK YOU for a wonderful two weeks of Swimming Lessons on the Lake in 2018! The weather proved to be just what we ordered, hot & only one day of rain.
Please put the following date on your calendar.
“Us” refers to the City of Vergas, the Vergas Lions Club and myself. It is the 3 of us that make Swim Lessons at the Lake possible!
My name is Nancy Jacobson & I am the lead instructor. The American Red Cross has certified me as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) & it is the Learn to Swim Lessons that are offered. Teaching lessons at the lake to all ages is my passion & this will be my 47th summer!
Lessons are held at the Vergas City Beach on Long Lake each summer for 2 weeks (the first 2 full weeks in July). In case of inclement weather, we may use the Vergas Community Center. Cost is $35 per child for 10 half hour classes M-F.
In order for swimming to be fun, all people involved, children & adults MUST put safety first. I pride myself by educating my students on safety in, on & by the water. It is my goal to create lifelong learners who enjoy what our beautiful lakes & rivers offer us.
I do believe in starting to teach children at a young age, therefore I offer several different levels of Preschool classes to fit the need.
The Learn-to-Swim program focuses on building skills one step at a time. By giving them the opportunity to master one element before moving on to the next, our kids' swim classes make it easy to build confidence in the water. Following you will find each level of the Red Cross Learn to Swim. Students must meet all the requirements of each level before moving on to the next one.
During their swim lessons, children will spend time on the following seven levels:
Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills: Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it.
Level 2: Fundamentals of Aquatic Skills: Children will learn basic swimming skills.
Level 3: Stroke Development: Additional guided practice will help students improve their skills.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement: Kids will gain confidence during swim lessons, improve their stroke and gain additional aquatic skills.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement: Guidance allows kids to refine their strokes and become more efficient swimmers.
Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency: Students will learn to swim with ease and efficiency, and gain the ability to swim smoothly over greater distances. Swimmers will also have the option to participate in more advanced courses.
For more information on skills, please download the FREE Red Cross App “Swim.” Learn to help keep your loved ones safe in & around water with drowning prevention & emergency response information. Includes educational games and videos for kids plus a swim lesson progress tracker.

“My 3 grandchildren have taken group lessons from Nancy for the past 3 summers. They live in the Minneapolis area, so it has been the big summer event for them to stay at the lake with Grandma & Grandpa for 2 weeks! It has been my dream that my grandchildren take swimming lessons in the lake, as I did as a child. Nancy is an excellent teacher & my grandchildren love her”
“Nancy is a miracle worker! After a traumatic water experience, our son was afraid to even stand in water. Even though I completely explained his fears, she still wanted to work with him. We still can’t believe that after only 2 (or was it 3?) years of private lessons, he now swims with his face in the water! Water parks are now our favorite family vacation!”
“Our son was terrified of the lake as a toddler. Miss Nancy was so understanding and nurturing as she helped him conquer his fears. He is now "a little fish" and has a love for swimming! Thank you, Nancy!”
